International Biannual of Cuenca

The International Painting Biannual of Cuenca is a cultural institution founded on October 25, 1985.  Since that day, Cuenca is the permanent meeting place of this event, whose objectives are to broadcast, research, exhibit, file, and to teach contemporary art.

Expositors come from several countries, many from Latin America.  In each Biannual a limited number of about 70 participants are designated. Artists exhibit their works during two months. The best works are chosen at the end of the Biannual to receive an award.

Nine editions have been organized until the present time; the next edition will take place in 2009.

Biannual of Scenic Arts

Event in which a series of theatrical and dance presentations are programmed, hosting groups of Latin American countries, who will be presented in public areas of the city, the presentations take place during a week and these are performed daily.

This event has had three previous editions and it is performed every two years.  The next event will take place in 2009, and will be directed by Paúl San Martín, a member of the Mano 3 Theatrical Group.

Andean Sculpture Hall

Andean Sculpture Hall is a contest that takes place every two years with the participation of sculptors from the Andean countries, who exhibit their works for one month in the facilities of the Museum of Modern Art. Three winners are chosen at the end of the contest.  The Andean Sculpture Hall has had three editions and the next will take place in 2009.

Festival of the Lyre

This event is a poetical contest that brings together national poets during a week in which a series of recitals take place. At the end the best are chosen for an award. Musical presentations with national musicians are performed in order to enhance the event.

The festival of The Lyre had its first public reading recently in 2007 and it will take place every two years. The organization in charge of the set up is the Casa de la Cultura (Culture Center) of Azuay.

International Movie Festival

This festivity aims at promoting The Latin American Movie Industry.  During a week, a   series of Latin American films are presented. Forums to discuss over the films that in general deal with themes related to the political and social reality of these countries are performed as part of the event.

Editions are published every two years. The entity in charge of the event is the Corporación Ecuatoriana de Artes Cinematográficas (Ecuadorian Corporation of Cinematographic Arts) ( CEACINE ) directed by Patricio Montaleza.
